OSDU
Katalyst joined the OSDU Forum in February 2019 and has been an active participant in its activities since then, contributing technology, personnel, and leadership to help realize the forum’s mission and vision.
To help grow our contributions and service to the OSDU Data Platform, Katalyst has self-hosted several different releases of the OSDU Data Platform on both AWS and Microsoft technologies. Running our own OSDU environments, working on the development of the Geospatial Consumption Zone, and actively participating in the pre-ship testing activities for version releases have allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the operational capabilities of the OSDU Data Platform.
In addition to actively participating in the OSDU Forum activities to progress the development of the OSDU Data Platform, Katalyst is exploring two main areas of business services for the OSDU Data Platform: Digital Transformation and Data Management Tooling and Services, and OSDU Data Platform Consulting.
Digital Transformation and Data Management Tooling and Services
In line with our main business activities of Digital Transformation and Data Management, Katalyst has developed tooling to load and naturalize data to the OSDU Data Platform, aligned with our philosophy that no data should be orphaned in an environment. This means that every data file we load to the OSDU Data Platform is linked to a subsurface element – survey, line, well, etc. – and can be accessed through the catalog.
We presently offer OSDU Data Platform Data Loaders for:
- Master Data
- Documents
- LAS Files
- SEGY Files
- VDS Files
Katalyst continues to invest in developing these and other tools to advance the practice of Data Management on the OSDU Data Platform.
OSDU Data Platform Consulting
Building upon our experience in self-hosting various versions of the OSDU Data Platform, our experience in contributing to the development of the Geospatial Consumption Zone, the External Data Service API endpoints and pre-ship testing, Katalyst is able to offer a broad range of consulting services for the OSDU Data Platform.
Partnerships
Katalyst partners with all four technology providers to the OSDU Data Platform: Microsoft, AWS, Google, and IBM. Our tools and services can be applied equally to the technologies of all four CSPs.
The OSDU® Data Platform – Consulting
Building upon our experience in self-hosting various versions of The OSDU® Data Platform, our experience in contributing to the development of the Geospatial Consumption Zone, the External Data Service API endpoints and pre-ship testing, Katalyst is able to offer a broad range of consulting services for The OSDU® Data Platform.
We provide experience in consulting services for:
- Creation, testing, and ingestion with extensible formats for new data types.
- Adoption and adaptation of data models for existing well-known schemas.
- Implementation of Technical Assurance workflows and customized services for populating metadata extracted from technical documents.
- Implementation of Technical Assurance workflows and customized services for populating metadata extracted from technical documents.
- Katalyst technical experts involved with working groups in the OSDU Forum creating open-source content for CCUS workflow harmonization, geophysical and microseismic data definitions, Rock and Fluid Samples domain data management, and liaison activities with the BlockChain for Energy seismic entitlements project.
Search and Order Portal – Wells
For the well domain, the Search and Order Portal allows users to search for wells in OSDU Data Platform by name, country, organization, etc. All of the wellbore locations also appear on the map and users can alternatively zoom in and draw a bounding box around the wells they wish to select. Clicking on each wellbore displays more information about the master data wellbore.
The search results show the wellbore names with metadata that can be expanded to show the work product components associated with the wellbore, such as wellbore trajectory, marker information and well logs. For every work product component, users can download the corresponding files individually or they can select a group of files to be downloaded to a storage location in the cloud. Subfolders are created with a unique signature and timestamp containing the data that has been ordered.
Reference Data Editor
The OSDU Data Model includes a vast array of Reference Data items, each with its own enumeration list, or “list of values.” Maintaining these controlled lists is crucial for ensuring referential integrity in stored data. These lists serve as the source for dropdown fields in user interfaces, where data items are controlled fields rather than free text.
Data managers often face challenges in managing these lists. For instance, they might need to add a new value or edit an existing value for OperatingEnvironment.
Our application addresses these needs. The user interface begins with a comprehensive list of Reference Data entities. Data managers can select a topic of interest and add new or edit existing values as required. These new values then become available for end users during data ingestion and for Data Discovery applications to present as dropdown options for searches.
Search and Order Portal – 3D Seismic
Very similar to the well approach, 3D seismic data can be selected from OSDU Data Platform either via textual search or via bounding box on the map within the Search and Order interface. For each 3D seismic survey(s) in the results, the search screen shows the associated work product components for the data, such as seismic trace data, document (ex: tape label information), velocity, etc. The files related to these work product components can either be downloaded and viewed individually or can be selected as a group and be sent to a cloud directory as with the well data.
In early 2021, Katalyst took stock of the progress and prepared for the enhancements required for the Search and Order Portal in release three (OSDU Data Platform R3), which will include 2D seismic data and other search features.
These Portal programs were developed using AWS, but it can easily be used on Google, Azure, IBM or any cloud service provider platform.
